Volunteering Opportunities
The Wētā Conservation Charitable Trust is run by volunteers. We are giving it all. But there’s always more work to be done than we can possibly do. Some tasks are simply out of our skill set.
Are you keen to help?
Below are some ideas on how you can contribute. If you see any gaps you think you can fill, even if these are not listed on this page, please get in touch. We will gladly listen to what you have to offer and evaluate how this might fit our trust purposes.
For any queries, email info@wetaconservation.org.nz.
Our projects need financial support. Are you good at raising funds? If you are, we want you!
Are you skilled with the use of Adobe InDesign or equivalent software? We could do with some help make our annual reports look more presentable, and possibly with the design of the occasional brochure.
Do you enjoy posting on social media? That’s great, because none of us does! The ideal candidate would also be passionate and somewhat knowledgeable about wētā & friends, since writing the posts’ contents does require some inside knowledge.
You can read about the project here.
In mid to late summer, twice to three times a year, we will be spending four to five nights at remote locations in the Southern Alps, conducting mark-recapture surveys for the giant wētā Deinacrida pluvialis. Four workers are required on each trip.
This work is not for everyone. Surveys are done at night. You must be comfortable camping in remote locations, walking off track on alpine terrain and under the cover of darkness. Preference will be given to volunteers who would like to commit long-term, since there is a bit of a learning curve at the start.
