A legend has left this world. His legacy continues
Entomologist, researcher, and author extraordinaire, George Gibbs passed away on 10 September 2026 at the age of 89. George has contributed immensely to the knowledge and conservation of our wētā. His books and photographs have inspired younger generations of wildlife enthusiasts dreaming of following in his footsteps.
George described several species of tusked and giant wētā. He was the first to survey the Southern Alps giant wētā Deinacrida pluvialis in the Matukituki River and in Price Basin in 1992. George was extraordinarily generous with his knowledge, support, and information to the Wētā Conservation Charitable Trust, right up until his death. We see it as our duty to continue his work.
A legend has left this world, but he will never be forgotten.
